Butterfly Lovers · Transforming into Butterflies

Composer: He Zhanhao, Chen Gang
Description: Butterfly Lovers · Transforming into Butterflies is the final movement of the renowned Chinese violin concerto The Butterfly Lovers, composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang in 1959. Based on the melodies of Shaoxing opera (Yue opera) and blended with Western symphonic techniques, the piece tells the tragic love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. In the “Transforming into Butterflies” section, the flute and harp evoke a dreamlike, fairy-tale scene, while the violin plays a poignant and beautiful theme, symbolizing the two lovers turning into butterflies, transcending death, and dancing together among the flowers in pursuit of eternal love and freedom.
